Abergavenny is officially a part of the Transition Town Network

 

Find out about the transition town movement and about the Abergavenny Transition Town group.

 

You are invited to attend a showing of the DVD ‘In Transition 2’ at 7pm on Tuesday 19th November in the St Michael’s Centre, Pen-y-pound, Abergavenny. This will be followed by a general discussion of the issues that the DVD raises.

 

A small contribution will be requested to cover tea, coffee and hire of the hall

Energy Bills and Green Energy – The Facts 

With intense political scrutiny on energy bills, it suits energy companies and certain politicians, to place the blame on green energy.

It is, therefore, important that we all keep telling people the facts.

  • Green measures are responsible for £112 of the average £1287 family dual fuel bill.
  • Of this, £37 is down to renewable subsidy (£30 ROCs and £7 FiT) – less than three percent of the average bill.
  • £47 pounds goes to ECO and other energy saving measures that reduce bills for those in fuel poverty.

As well as useful information on technologies and tariffs, we’ll have on display a 24kW pellet boiler and a standard 2mx2mx3m 2 tonne pellet store, a working air source heat pump (so you can hear for yourself they are no louder than background conversation), and solar PV and solar thermal systems.
We also have a working ground source heat pump and a borehole-fed ground-water-source heat pump. And of course if you arrive in an electric car you’re welcome to plug into our solar carport. You can also enjoy our orchard and apiary or picnic in the gazebo by the pond.

As part of the Monmouthshire Action Plans for Sustainability project, we are running a study tour to Llangattock Green Valleys on the morning of 28th October between 10am-1pm. Llangattock Green Valleys is a community near Crickhowell with around 400 homes which actively run a number of carbon saving initiatives. These include; community energy schemes, an energy monitoring website for the local community, allotments, a biodiesel club and a community woodland group. The study tour will include:

·         A guided tour of the village from a member of the community.

·         An opportunity to gather information and ideas on what is possible to make a community more sustainable.

·         Refreshments after the tour with a chance to discuss the tour with other members of the group.

There is limited availability with two places reserved for each area participating in the MAPS project; Mardy, Portskewett, Wyesham, Raglan, Llandogo & Skenfrith. The places will be allocated on a first come first served bases. There will be a minibus to the study tour with pickups in Monmouth and Raglan. If you would like to travel on the minibus please indicate this in the email as there are limited places available.
