Hay Baler request

We will be mowing by scythes our community orchard field in late July and then when the hay is ready we had planned to bale it using a hand hay baler and subsequently selling the hay bales for pet food for rabbits etc. to cover running costs. Unfortunately Barry Greenwood is unable to make the device in time for haymaking.

The design for the hay baler comes from Pine straw in East Texas and has been used by Caring for Gods Acre here and they have reproduced the plan of the baler on their  website, see email attached.  CFGA are drawing up plans but not yet produced.

Abergavenny Community Orchard is asking if you know anyone who could or would make this device. We would pay for materials and a fee if there is someone who could produce it and there are videos on You Tube which provide further interpretation of the design and construction. Alternatively we would be willing to hire one if you know of one in existence.
If one is made we would make it available for hire. or any alternative suggestions. Our 86 trees are planted at 5 metres each way on an acre of reclaimed ground.

We will hopefully finish off the planting at  the Youth Centre this week if you can come along on this Wednesday evening for an hour at 7pm. The Youth Centre is on the Old Hereford Road just above the football ground on the corner. Bring hand forks and trowels. The young people involved so far have not done anything like this before and its quite a revelation to them. The idea behind this that when crops are ready they will cook them and Freddy Edmonds has the equipment to do this and hopefully will show them how.

On Thursday morning we are meeting with officers from MCC ay the bus station 10pm survey the central car parks in Abergavenny to survey each location to work out sites for planters and small flowering meadows.

We had an open day in the Cantref with garden visits which was well attended and visitors to our garden were impressed with the small flowering meadow my son sowed laqst year which is flower rich and buzzing with wild bees. Way to go and in a years time with Monmouthshire’s new policy of licensing green spaces to communities would  transform Abergavenny together with fruit, herbs  and veg.

Whether you read the local press or not I’m sure you’ve been wondering what’s happening with the Park Street project since it was announced in February that a Fire Risk Assessment carried out on the building by Estates suggested a level of works which the Cabinet would need to agree to fund, in order for the [3 year] Lease agreement to be activated.

Keep Abergavenny Tidy will be holding its AGM at 7.30pm on Thursday 11 July this year. It is a chance to meet up with others who may be concerned about the cleanliness of the town and to discuss ways to improve or maintain it.  It will be held in the conservative club (on Park Rd almost opposite Robert Price).

For anyone interested in signing up to help keep your corner of Abergavenny tidy, there will also be the opportunity for a short induction to receive your volunteer litter warden kit. Please let us know if you wanted to receive a kit to make sure we have enough ready.

Himalayan Balsam – Sat 29th June

If you are interested in helping Friends of Castle Meadows to control the invasive alien Himalayan Balsam plant, some sessions have already been run but there is one remaining next Saturday. You don’t need any previous experience, the plant can be uprooted easily and previous sessions have proved sociable and fun.

It is a good idea to wear long sleeves and long trousers to protect from stinging nettles and to wear gloves. Spares will be available. Strong shoes are also advised.

If you are interested simply turn up at the Byefield Lane car park entrance to the meadows and join the group:

Saturday June 29th between 10am and noon

This is to remind you about the Bryn y Cwm Community Forum meeting this coming Thursday, 27 June, in St Michael’s starting at 7.00pm. All are welcome to find out about changes to the waste and recycling service from representatives of Monmouthshire County Council. If you are like me, you probably need some help to understand what can be recycled and what can’t!  This is your chance to ask questions about the way in which waste will be collected and treated.
