Crucorney Energy Group ‘Walk in the Woods’ will be on 31st August, at Great Llwygy: 10am – 1pm.

Join Rob Penn as he takes you on a special tour tour of Strawberry Cottage Wood as featured in the BBC TV series ‘Tales From The Wild Wood’.

Rob will explain how the Crucorney Energy Group makes charcoal and also show the effect of the coppice work we have undertaken over the last few years, both as a woodland group and for the TV series. There will be activities for kids during the walk and games at the end. There is a ‘bring your own’ picnic and bbq at the end of the walk and soft drinks will be provided. Barbecues and charcoal will be ready or you to use when you return and cool boxes will be available so you do not have to carry your picnic on the walk.

Meet 10am on 31st August
At the bottom of the drive to Great Llwygy
The walk will take about 2 hours. Anyone unable to participate in the walk is welcome to join us for the picnic afterwards.

FUTURE MANAGEMENT OF MONMOUTHSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL CAR PARKS

STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOPS

In 2011 Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) undertook an investigation into the current management of car parking, the issues surrounding the service and prepared options for how the service might be reorganised in the future.

No changes were introduced at that time but work has now recommenced into developing options and proposals for the future management of MCC car parks.

The exercise is being managed on behalf of MCC by Rhian Watts and Ben Pritchard of Parsons Brinkerhoff ( Parsons Brinkerhoff now provide support to the Council on a range of services previously provided by Capita Gwent) .

As ever, you’re reading this because you’ve expressed an interest in Transition Monmouth and its events. Please email us to be removed from the list.

Reuse + recycle even more ….

We are working on various projects + it looks like this one will happen – a new reuse + recycling hub at Bridges Community Centre. The idea is not to collect vast quantities but rather to produce adirectory of “what to take where” to ensure that as many unwanted items + materials as possible are put to the best possible use – things like white goods, furniture items, used oil, leftovers from your DIY, old tools – it doesn’t matter that these are broken +/or rusty – let’s get them fit for purpose once again rather than throw them out. Bridges would be used for collecting smaller items such as mobile phones, inkjet cartridges, CDs + DVDs, iPads, computers + the like. We will keep you posted but, in the meantime, if you have any bright reuse/recycle ideas, know of facilities that we should publicise, or if you are up for helping with the research, please let us know. We aim to get this off the ground in the autumn + need all the help we can get.

It’s taken ten years but summer at last seems to have come – + we will be taking a bit of a break – but in the meantime we will be going to:-

Green Gathering – Thursday to Monday, 1-4 August at Piercefield Park, Chepstow – a great, fun gathering, loads of activities + yummy food – + a Transition Tent. Gwent Wildlife Trust Open Day – Tuesday, 6 August, 11 till 4 at Dingestow Court – a great day out for the family – stalls – + yes, we’ll be there with a Swap Shop – children’s activities, a sandwich bar provided by the Red Door Deli + beautiful gardens to enjoy

BYO BBQ at Wentwood – a beautiful area near Chepstow that is under development by R3 Cymru – on Tuesday, 20 August @ 7pm. Come + see what’s going on + have a bit of a party – all welcome!

And, of course, there are still a load of open gardens listed in the Green Book for Monmouthshire.

Bales weigh 4.5 kilos and can be obtained at the orchard field at the bottom of Mill Street after 6pm or at the Farmers Market Thursday 25th July from 9am. Zero Carbon Britain (ZCB) Report Launched

Thanks to your support we launched the latest Zero Carbon Britain (ZCB) report in parliamentlast week. It was an amazing day! I am still a little overwhelmed by the level of interest and the very positive reception the report is now receiving. After the recent frustrations of carbon in the atmosphere moving above the worrying 400ppm mark, and fracking becoming a serious possibility, it provides a most refreshing and positive perspective on how we can create a clean, sustainable energy infrastructure, while preserving the natural ecosystems and beauty of Britain.

Based on hourly weather and energy demand data, the report outlines, in detail, the decisions policy makers must begin taking today to invest in a reliable and clean energy future that will not only enable a sustainable and independent British energy structure, but will also create a million jobs, stimulate the economy and secure Britain’s future for a long time to come.

I personally think this is the best ZCB report to date and am very excited by it. It really feels like we’re moving way ahead of the game and keeping the Centre For Alternative Technology as radical as it was 30 years ago when people thought wind turbines and PV panels would never become main-stream. The innovative use of synthetic fuels to balance the variable provision of electricity from wind generation and the land-use research with regards to diet, bio-fuels and national independence – these innovative approaches are paramount to addressing and mitigating the effects of climate change. The report shows how we can control our future and create the kind of safe, clean world we want, instead of blindly following a path that would leave future generations with a larger mess to clean up.

I’d like to offer my sincere thanks for all your donations and support; I can’t thank you enough for helping make all this possible. I do hope you share in our sense of achievement, as you have been very much a part of it.

The next Community Canteen will be on Saturday 17th August at 7-00 for 7-30pm at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Baker St, Abergavenny. We will be raising money for the newly formed Abergavenny Transition Town. For more information on Transition visit www.transitionnetwork.org

The meal will have a Greek theme. As usual it will be vegetarian using locally grown organic vegetables and Fairtrade ingredients.

We ask for a minimum contribution to cover the costs of the meal and the room hire. All the money we collect after meeting these costs will go toAbergavenny Transition Town.

Important considerations when attempting to engage people in transition town debate and activity:

FYI an extract from a guardian article about TT that is worth bearing in mind fr the community fair and abergavenny tt in general!

“In the biggest, most successful Transition groups, every effort is made to avoid being worthy. The Tooting group’s first big event was a big street celebration, a Trashcatcher’s Carnival, with Arts Council funding. “In Topsham, in Devon, they asked: ‘What is it that unites people in this town? Is it peak oil, or is it beer?’ And they started a brewery. What are you inviting people to be part of? A group that talks about climate change? Or a historic, celebratory rethink about a place and what it does?”

The key thing is to find ways to bring people together. “In Totnes, we started to change the narrative: how do we create a culture of entrepreneurship, and support young people? And all kinds of new people came in.”

At the first Local Entrepreneurs Forum, local business people gave advice to would-be entrepreneurs. But later they switched to a Community of Dragons, in which enterprises pitched to the entire community. And on the basis that “everybody is an investor”, individuals pledged support in the form of time, cash, land, support, services and more. ”

Also, Hopkin’s new book ‘the power of doing stuff’…

“… he wrote the book with his own sister in mind. “I hope she won’t mind me saying that! She’s raising kids, she’s very busy. She is somebody for whom all this stuff would pass her by. Not interesting at all. But if Transition is going to get anywhere, it needs to reach people like her.”

Perhaps a good present for any sceptical partners or friends… a gentle nudge. I’ve just ordered my copy happy to pass it around.
