Just Food

Just Food provides opportunities to debate the political issues around food & hunger from social justice & sustainability perspectives.  Launched during 2013 by regulars at the Community Canteen, our first public event was on the Fringe of the Abergavenny Food Festival.

Inspired by the feeling that there should be a space to debate such issues at the Festival, we organised a day long programme that addressed the global food system, land use, poverty & hunger worldwide and challenges for farming locally.

The Just Food event organised by Abergavenny Community Canteen in association with Abergavenny Transition Town was a resounding success with over 200 people visiting the series of short talks and discussions and eating the delicious food cooked by the Chef Kate and her dedicated team of workers.

Further events on the Abergavenny Food Festival Fringe have followed and in the Autumn of 2015 a Harvest Gathering was held at the Community Centre featuring a film, talks & debates, lunch and tea and fruit juicing.

We heard how service station on the M5 near Gloucester is supplied with the locally sourced food from within a 35 mile radius – a welcome alternative to the global corporate outlets being lined up at the time for Llanfoist. Other topics were the threat to pollinators, with Bee Friendly Monmouthshire and the likely impact on food of TTIP (the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership).
